During
construction of an instrument I have a picture on my mind of how I want
the instrument to look once its finished...
Many of you ask where I get the wood from? The selection process? Most of my instruments are made that I've carefully selected from Puerto Rico. I do have instruments that I've made with Rosewood, mahogany and Curly maple. Woods not known to originate from Puerto Rico. After careful selection of the wood, I mill it, and stiker it. The stickering process allows for air to circulate in between the layers of wood for faster drying and curing. My typical waiting time to use wood from Puerto Rico is a minimum of 2 yrs in my local environment. The wood has been carefully selected, dried and cured to adapt its use in the Northeast and West Coast of the United States.
This lends itself to an instrument that its materials of construction
would handle favorably the drier conditions experienced in any part of
the United States during the winter months and would handle favorably
conditions experienced in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
Each instrument is built individually and carefully, no rush. The
normal time frame for the construction of an instrument is from three
to six months. All my heart and care goes into the construction of
these instruments. Once finished, you would be able to enjoy for many
years a beautiful instrument made especially for you.

If you did't come as I asked then you missed The Second Puerto Rican Cuatro Festival in Southern California!

The Second Annual Puerto Rican
Cuatro Festival took place in the beautiful San Gabriel Civic Center last September 1st, 2007. Alvin & Elsie Medina, Yomo Toro, Edwin Colon Zayas y su Taller Campesino and Nelian Colon filled the hearts of every attendee with their beautiful musical expression with the Cuatros. I am still in awe to partake in such an event. I am ecstatic to know that the boricuas in California are saying Presente...count me in!!
